Abstract

The Anderson papers consist of career papers, correspondence, subject files, writings, and other miscellaneous items related to the military career of Bern Anderson. The majority of the materials in this collection are from the career series and the correspondence series. These materials reflect many angles of his active United States Naval duty including: his personal letters during active duty, his materials regarding Operation Hollandia, his published and unpublished writings, diaries, citations, photographs, and newspaper clippings.

Abstract Papers: Blueprints of and calculations for devices to counter the Acoustic Torpedo developed for ASDEVLANT, Quonset Point NAS, RI, and Surface Division of ASDEVLANT, Port Everglades, FL, 1943–1945; Blueprints and calculations for Damage Control and Hull Stability tests developed for Damage Control Project, Stevens Institute of Technology, Hoboken, NJ, 1945–1947; Correspondence, memoranda and reports regarding inventions and devices, 1938–1948. Scope and Contents The collection consists of forty-seven boxes of blueprints of anti-submarine and damage control devices, as well as those for yachts and the Aluminette. Included are mathematical calculations, technical booklets and reports, and correspondence relating to his work for the U.S. Navy in World War II and the immediate postwar era. From 1943 to 1947, Burgess worked for the Navy under personal service contracts: first for the Surface Division of ASDEVLANT at Quonset Point Naval Air Station, Rhode Island, and the U.S. Coast Guard Base at Port Everglades, Florida, and second, with the Damage Control Project administered by the Navy’s Office of Research and Inventions at Stevens Institute of Technology, 1945–1947. During his first assignment, he worked on acoustic torpedo countermeasures. After his retirement he spent 30 years working and consulting for SRI International. Henry Kent Hewitt papers

Content Description The Naval War College Naval Historical Collection houses a small but interesting segment of Hewitt materials. The collection focuses mainly on the illustrious wartime career of Admiral Hewitt, although there are materials from both earlier and later time periods. The materials are contained in fourteen boxes and a folio file drawer. The collection measures thirteen linear feet and is divided into four series: correspondence, writings, miscellany, and photographs.Series I, official correspondence, consists of letters, memoranda, and telegrams, both congratulatory and informational, dealing with the various amphibious operations that ADM Hewitt commanded. They include Operations Torch, Husky, Avalanche, and Dragoon-Anvil. Correspondents were from the highest military and civilian echelons and include General Dwight D. Eisenhower, President Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Admiral Ernest .J. King. Other correspondence deals with President Roosevelt's voyage in USS INDIANAPOLIS to the Pan American Conference in Buenos Aires in 1936 and in the post-war period with reminiscences of World War II. Correspondents from this Lime period include Winston Churchill, Admiral Sir John Cunningham, RN, and President Franklin D. Roosevelt.The second series, writings, contains the unpublished memoirs of Admiral Hewitt. Morton Levine papers

Abstract

This collection is comprised of a wartime memoir, entitled "Set Condition One," written by Morton Levine. Levine was a U.S. Navy soldier who served on the USS San Diego (CL-53) during World War II. Other documents include two editions of the Bureau of Naval Personnel Information Bulletin from May and June 1945, as well as research documents about USS San Diego and Atlanta-class cruisers in World War II.
